Letter from the President

CHEER board members have demonstrated their dedication to the preservation and protection of the natural resources in the Pajaro River watershed for the last 14 years.   In the fall of 1991, CHEER board members created the Tri-County Environmental Protection Committee, this group made up of concerned sportsmen, environmentalists, community members and activists noticed a severe decline in the steelhead population.  The committee decided to take a “hands-on” approach to evaluating, and inventorying premier steelhead spawning habitat in South Santa Clara County.  Through the Financial support of a business donor Aquatic Systems Research was hired to research and evaluate the degradation in steelhead populations (March 1992).

The committee with research in hand brought attention to the serious environmental problems within the watershed.  It was determined that despite the negative impacts on the health of the entire ecosystem, the habitat could still support steelhead.  April 1992, a restoration project took place in South County restocking 7,500 steelhead back into watershed streams.  In February 1993, a proposed Timber Harvesting plan on the banks of Pescadero creek would have destroyed prime spawning grounds; again the committee with attorney in tow opposed the plan at the public hearing and after an on site inspection of the plan was able to mitigate protections for the pristine and sensitive ecosystem.

Tri-County EPC members now make up the CHEER board and with your support will continue to engage in the restoration, protection, preservation of wildlife and natural resources while striving for ecological balance.
